In this weekends Florida vs New Jersey doubleheader, Don Bosco pulled out a win and Bergen Catholic was unable so finish off the job. Both teams had to face 100 plus degree weather throughout each of their games. Don Bosco started off sloppy vs Manatee committing silly penalties and allowed the Manatee crowd of over 6,000 to get to them. However, the Ironmen refused to let the Manatee defense stop them. Don Bosco found its groove in the second half after they were down 6-7. The Ironmen offense scored two touchdowns led by quarterback Mike Yankovich and the defense held Manatee to under 75 yards in the second half. Bosco ended up winning the game 22-16 and held on to the top spot in the country In the other New Jersey vs. Florida matchup, Bergen Catholic faced off against Plant. The Crusaders (Bergen’s nickname) came out strong as senior running back Mike Gerst ran up the middle for 47 yards for a touchdown. Unfortunately, the Bergen offense was unable to gain more than 200 yards after the touchdown run and failed to put up anymore points. The Crusader’s defense stopped Plant several times but it was the big plays that hurt them. Plant had 4 plays of 20 yards or more. New Jersey finished 1-1 vs Florida this weekend.
In this article, ESPN’s Brandon Parker expresses the importance of out of state high-school football games. Parker also shows how important it was for New Jersey to show off its talent by traveling down to Florida. This news story proves that New Jersey High-School football has the weapons and teams to compete with out of state opponents such as Manatee and Plant. The people who rank the national high-school football teams need to realize that New Jeresey is a serious competitor in high-school football when it comes to the national stage and that they deserve more credit. Bosco Maintains Number One Spot, Bergen Falls Short can easily be an alternate headline for this story. If I had a question about the story it would be : Has New Jersey received more attention when it comes to High-School Football because of its impressive out of state record?
