Rutgers first to offer Don Bosco DB

Daivon Ellison has started in the Don Bosco secondary for the past two seasons. He has the numbers to prove he is a playmaker for one of the state’s top programs. Ellison now has his first Division 1 offer.

Rutgers tight ends coach Anthony Campanile came to Don Bosco on Thursday to watch Ellison lift with his team, and then offered the junior defensive back his first scholarship. Ellison said he was not expecting Rutgers to offer anytime in the near future.

“They like the way I play, they like my character and they feel I can make Rutgers a better football team,” he said.

Ellison has a good relationship with Campanile, who served as Bosco’s offensive coordinator during Ellison’s freshman season.

Ellison said he likes that Rutgers is in-state and that several of his former teammates go there. He also said he likes that Rutgers has a good reputation of sending defensive backs to the NFL. Don Bosco currently has five alumni on the Rutgers roster including Leonte Carroo and Darius Hamilton, who both played with Ellison.

I don’t say this about too many guys, but Ellison has been worthy of an offer since the end of his sophomore season. He has continued to hold his own vs. numerous Division 1-bound wide receivers. As a junior, he contributed on the offensive side of the ball as a slot receiver. Ellison also returns kicks for the Ironmen as well. Although considered undersized by many at 5’9, Ellison has the heart of a lion. He has become one of the most popular players in New Jersey since establishing himself as a playmaker during his sophomore year.

Many New Jersey prospects congratulated Ellison when they found out that Rutgers had extended him his first tender. Ellison received compliments from Jonathan Hilliman (Boston College commit), Noah Brown (Ohio State commit), and several teammates on Twitter. Rightfully so, you could tell Rutgers made a good choice.

Ellison’s recruitment should pick up now that he has his first offer. He has plans to visit Rutgers, Boston College and Temple for their Junior Day’s sometime this spring.
