In front of a crowd of over 3,000 people Friday night, Old Tappan scored 28 unanswered second half points to come from behind and beat Pascack Valley to advance to the state championship game.
Old Tappan quarterback Devin Fuller lead the way for the Golden Knights by scoring four touchdowns and completing each of his passes in the second half. Pascack Valley started off strong and had a 10-6 lead at halftime.
The Pascack Valley offense came out flat in the second half and never got it going. Old Tappan got help from two transfers defensively. Ethan Fredricks and Travis Procida both transferred this year from Bergen Catholic.
HOW THE GAME WAS WON: Old Tappan put together a second half comeback by scoring 28 points. The Pascack Valley offense was held scoreless in the second half and Old Tappan was able to score on every offensive possession in the second half.
TURNING POINT: Junior transfer Travis Procida picked off Valley quarterback Kyle Schnieder after Old Tappan scored the go-ahead touchdown. Procida returned it 33 yards down the sideline to set up first and goal at the 7. The next play, running back Keith Rodman ran it in to give Old Tappan a 21-10 lead with 2:34 left in the third. The Golden Knights never looked back after that.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Devin Fuller – The All- American quarterback took over in the second half by completing all four of his passes and produced three of his four touchdowns to mount a second half comeback. Whenever Old Tappan needed a first down, touchdown, or big play Fuller was there for the rescue.
QUOTE OF THE GAME: “I didn’t really worry about it.” Fuller said of his team being down at the half time. Fuller’s confidence in his team made it look like they planned to be down at halftime and then put a comeback together.
UP NEXT: The Golden Knights will face the Wayne Hills Patriots in the North 1, Group 3 state championship game. This will be a rematch of last years North 1, Group 3 final. Pascack Valley’s season is over.
