EAST RUTHERFORD-
Despite all the criticism, controversy, and whatever else you want to call it, Wayne Hills came out with North 1, Group 3 state title on Saturday night at Metlife Stadium.
Old Tappan had control at halftime, but Wayne Hills wasn’t going away. The Golden Knights were up 12-0 at halftime and it was the first time that Wayne Hills had been shut out in the first half. The Patriots scored 15 unanswered points to come from behind and win their second state title in as many years.
HOW THE GAME WAS WON: Wayne Hills forced 4 turnovers in the second half and scored 15 unanswered points to win the North 1, Group 3, state title. Junior wide receiver Jeff Gignac cpaped off a stellar night by catching a 25 yard touchdown pass with 3:05 remaining to put Wayne Hills on top.
TURNING POINT: With 2:35 remaining, Old Tappan quarterback Devin Fuller fumbled and Wayne Hills took control until they were forced to punt with :18 seconds left in the game. It was Fuller’s fourth turnover of the game. He hadn’t had this many turnovers all year.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Junior wide receiver Jeff Gignac caught 8 passes for 140 yards including the game winning touchdown to give Wayne Hills their second North 1, Group 3 title in a row.
QUOTE OF THE GAME: When I asked Kevin Olsen about his mindset during the fourth quarter he said “We could definitely win this game”. That proves that Wayne Hills was confident although they were down 12-7 and facing an All-American quarterback with 12 minutes left in the game.
