Getting back on track… And the Yuri Wright story

It is hard to believe that the high school football season ended just a month and a half ago. It feels like state championship weekend was 6 months ago. So much has happened in the North Jersey sector of high-school football. This week most of New Jersey’s highly recruited players are narrowing down their choices and starting to announce their college decision dates. Here’s a look at a few players who I will be focusing on.

Recruiting Notes:

– Darius Hamilton- The Rivals defensive player of the year will chose between Florida, Rutgers, and California on January 31st on MSG Varsity. Although he has been there several times, Darius will visit Rutgers this weekend for his official visit.

– Devin Fuller- The most highly recruited player in New Jersey is still choosing between Rutgers, TCU, UCLA, Arizona, Alabama and Nebraska. Fuller is yet to announce when he will make his decision but I have a hunch it will be in the next few weeks. He will visit Rutgers this weekend for an official visit along with Darius Hamilton and Ryan Brodie.

-Vin Ascolese- The former North Bergen Linebacker is coming off his official visit to Arkansas in which he received an offer. Ascolese will be visiting Illinois this weekend as well. He has narrowed his choices down to Arkansas, Illinois, and a school yet to be named. My feeling is that school is Oklahoma State but it could also be Cincinatti or Michigan State. He is set to announce this Friday at his school’s gymnasium around 12:30. I will be there for full coverage of the event.

– Ryan Brodie- The offensive tackle from Long Branch High School has narrowed his choices down to two schools; Rutgers and Connecticut. Brodie will visit Rutgers for his official visit this weekend and will announce Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Wright expelled from Don Bosco due to racial tweets

Just a little while after I came home from school on Thursday, I heard from a source that Yuri Wright had been expelled from Don Bosco. Wright, an Army All-American cornerback, was expelled after a series of racial and graphic tweets that had been continued since August.

Several reports have indicated that the University of Michigan put a halt to their recruitment on Yuri and this is believed to be a direct result of the incident.

This has led me to believe that Wright will likely receive word sometime in the near future that other schools have lost interest in him. However, I think he will defintely keep some of his offers due to his natural talent.

Wright is expected to attend Spring Valley High School for the rest of the year as he tries to get back on the right track.

“He’s a good kid and I think he has a bright college future and I wish him the best of luck,” said Don Bosco football coach Greg Toal.

Wright was intending on taking his official visit to Rutgers this weekend, but it is unsure if he will be in attendance due to the incident.

Few interesting things about this story:

1- Wright’s twitter page was private
2- It is interesting how it is only after the football season that Don Bosco found out about this
3- This is not the first time Wright has received punishment from Bosco. Last year he was forced to leave the basketball team due to his bad attitude.
