The first Bergen County All Star Game in three years was held at Overpeck Park in Palisades Park Saturday night. Seniors from all around Bergen County were able to strap on the pads one more time before they head to the next level. For a game that didn’t have much hype leading up to it, both sides really put on a show. Kyle Schneider’s 2 yard touchdown pass to Mahwah’s Greg Rozar in the corner of the end zone with 39 seconds helped the North squad defeat the South in front of a crowd of over 2,000.
Both teams sent in different players each series so there weren’t really consistent starters. However, Bergenfield RB Will Rodriguez played the majority of the second half in the offensive backfield for the South, and he really played well.
Both teams only had 2 weeks of practice prior to the game and as you would expect, the game got off to a slow start. Each squad traded possessions and then North QB Danny Thompson (Indian Hills) was able to break off a nice run on 3rd down to keep his drive alive. Thompson used his mobility each series that he was in, to to convert on third downs. His first drive stalled at the South 13 when his haul into the end zone was broken up by a few South defenders on fourth down. Thompson impressed me all night with his quick feet and ability to avoid Hackensack’s DE Jason Smith who was after the North QB’s all night.
Pascack Valley QB Kyle Schneider helped the North squad put a drive together with under two minutes remaining that help set up his game winning touchdown pass. Schneider connected with St Mary’s AJ Godsil for 12 yards and then hit his former teammate Nick Sorvilla on a post route for 41 yards. Two plays later, Schneider was able to give his team the lead when he floated a ball into the corner of the end zone that landed in the hands of his teammate, Greg Rozar.
“Coach put me in for that final drive and it was a great feeling” said Schneider.
Notable Perfomances:
-Hackensack DE Jason Smith was in the backfield the entire night. He picked up two fumbles and had 2 sacks. Smith will take his talents to Division 1 UMass next year.
-Indian Hills QB Danny Thomspon really impressed me with his mobility. He was able to throw on the run as well. He is headed to Gettsyburg next year.
-Pascack Hills DE Joe Zariello had two tackles for loss for the North squad. He will play for Curry College in the fall.
-Bergenfield RB Will Rodriguez handled the majority of the running game for the South squad in the second half. He made people miss and showed off his agility on several carries.
