Rutgers 7 on 7 Recap, Bosco’s Sweeney Talks Recruiting

Rutgers held its annual 7 on 7 tournament on Saturday for high schools all over the tri-state area. Bergen Catholic, DeMatha (Maryland), DePaul, St. Joseph (Montvale), St. Peters Prep, and Don Bosco all participated in the tournament that featured 68 teams. Each team played 4 games and then a playoff bracket was assembled. Don Bosco beat DePaul in the semis and St. Peters Prep in the final to win the tournament.

-Nutile looks like a totally different quarterback from last year. He threw several nice deep balls to his receivers in the tournament. The Temple commit is going to be dangerous next year if he continues to perform like he did at Rutgers.

– DePaul looked really good in the playoffs vs DeMatha (Maryland) even though they lost in OT. They added two D-1 bound transfers in Courtel Jenkins and former St. Joseph DB/WR Kiy Hester this offseason. Hester spent his freshman and sophomore years at DePaul before transferring to St. Joseph (Montvale) before last year. Now he is back at DePaul. The move by Hester is a big hit for St. Joseph after losing wide receiver Ricky Jeune and tight end Matt Buckman to graduation. As for DePaul QB Zach Bednarczyk, he now has two Division 1 targets to throw to in Rutgers commit Justin Nelson and Hester.

-Bergen Catholic played well in their 7 on 7’s vs Montclair and Johnson. Quarterback Colin McGovern has filled in as a nice replacement for Jon Germano. Wide receiver Kyle Vadis was the primary target in both 7 on 7’s for McGovern.

Sweeney Talks Recruiting:

Don Bosco tight end Tom Sweeney is attracting more attention from FBS schools after picking up an offer from Boston College last week. During the 7 on 7’s, he proved to be a vital target for his quarterback. Frank Nutile. The connection between the two is going to be critical for Bosco, who plays an out of state opponent in each of their first three weeks.

Sweeney put up an impressive performance at Boston College last week that helped him land his first FBS offer.

“They had been evaluating me last season and we had been in contact before, and this was a good way for me to get myself in front of them” he said.

Sweeney’s top schools as of now are Syracuse, Boston College, Rutgers, Virginia and University of Miami in no particular order. Delaware also offered him two weeks ago.
