Bergen Catholic vs. John Curtis Recap

Metairie, Louisiana- Bergen Catholic was unable to keep up with the John Curtis running game and maintain a consistent offense in their 24-13 loss at Joe Yenni Stadium Friday night. John Curtis kept Bergen Catholic on its heels the entire first half using three running backs that accumulated a total of 220 yards by halftime which gave them a 24-7 lead.

Bergen Catholic quarterbacks Jarrett Guaranto and Colin McGovern split time throughout the first half often substituting for each other throughout the Crusader’s offensive possessions. After being forced into third and long on several possessions, The Crusaders could not find a rhythm in the passing game  and became too predictable. Jarrett Guaranto lost a fumble on Bergen’s first drive of the second half and he had already thrown an interception in the first half. It was time for a change.
After a John Curtis drive stalled, Bergen continued its sloppy play when Garrett Dickerson juggled a pass from quarterback Connor McGovern that ended up in the hands of a John Curtis defender. The Crusaders committed three turnovers Friday night. Bergen was able to get a critical stop as John Curtis threatened to break open their 24-7 lead midway through the 3rd quarter. After a Garrett Dickerson sack, Colin McGovern led his offense 80 yards down the field on a drive capped off by a Connor Russo 1 yard touchdown run. That cut the lead to 24-13 with 2:04 left in the third quarter. After the drive that cut down John Curtis’ lead, McGovern took more snaps under center than Guaranto.
Bergen was able to get a few more stops on defense, but McGovern was unsuccessful in helping his offense put more points on the board. The Crusaders drove down to the John Curtis 5 yard line with under two minutes remaining in hopes of making it a one possession game. Tight End Garrett Dickerson was called for offensive pass interference on a fade route that backed Bergen up to the John Curtis 15. McGovern was picked off two plays later and all hope for Bergen Catholic was virtually gone. The Crusaders fell to the Patriots and lost their third game vs. an out of state team in as many years. McGovern proved vs. John Curtis that he is capable of making good decisions and knows when to tuck the ball and run. The Crusaders will be better off using one quarterback for the rest of the year in order to give McGovern as much varsity exposure as possible. Bergen Catholic will play next weekend vs. Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah.
