Westwood vs. Waldwick/Midland Park Preview

Westwood hosts Waldwick/Midland Park on the campus of Kean University today at 4 p.m. for the North 1, Group 2 sectional championship. Westwood is a complete team with a good offensive line. They have a quarterback who can throw in Craig Carmilani (committed to Amherst). Junior Nolan Borgersen is reliable as ever when it comes to making plays and broke the state record for most receiving yards in a single season. Through 11 games, Borgersen has 79 receptions for a state-record 1,749 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also plays safety for the Cardinals.

I do not know much about Waldwick/Midland Park, but I know they do love to run the ball. Their quarterback is #18, Evan Pagliei, who rushed for 106 yards on 12 carries in the semifinal win over North Warren. Walwick/Midland Park and Westwood did not share any games with the same opponents this year. I noticed from Waldwick/Midland Park’s schedule that they did play several Group 1 schools throughout the year including Park Ridge, Saddle Brook, and Hasbrouck Heights. Both teams put up a lot of points and  I think this game might be closer than the blowout that most anticipate.

Here’s a stat comparison I made between the two teams:

A look at the numbers: Westwood Waldwick/Midland Park
Avg points per game: 42 44.2
Avg points against per game:                             9 7.8
Record: (10-1) (9-2)
Who they beat to get here: Elmwood Park, Newton Glen Rock, North Warren

The pick: Westwood 35, Waldwick 21
