St. Peter’s Prep shut its critics, doubters, and opponent out of contention on Thursday night by defeating Bergen Catholic 49-20 at Caven Point in Jersey City. The Marauders dominated in all aspects of the game. They controlled the tempo on offense by running the two-minute drill to their leisure. Defensively, they sacked Bergen Catholic quarterback Jarrett Guarantano five times and forced three turnovers.
How the game was won: St. Peter’s Prep scored touchdowns on its first four possessions to open up with a 28-0 lead. They also held Bergen Catholic to 78 yards of offense in the first half.
Turning point: Brandon Wimbush connected with Kolton Huber on a 10 yard fade route that made it 21-0. The throw was perfectly placed and Huber made a nice adjustment to get his feet in the end zone before he was forced out. After the touchdown, Wimbush was 9-10 with 124 yards through the air and three touchdowns. The first quarter hadn’t even ended yet. There was no comeback in sight after Wimbush’s impressive throw to make it a three possession game before the first quarter expired.
Player of the game: Brandon Wimbush. The St. Peter’s Prep quarterback and Penn State commit was simply lights out. His passes were almost always on target, he knew when to run, and managed the game like he was dominating in the latest version of Madden.
Quote of the Game: “We play for the people who put the helmets on and the pads on before us. We wanted to show the people in the world to do what we had to do,” – Brandon Wimbush.
Up Next: St. Peter’s Prep plays Seton Hall Prep next week. That should be an easy win. Bergen Catholic will have its hands full next week when they travel to Bentonville, Arkansas in hopes of getting back on the winning track.
